1. Greystones South Beach (The Hungry Acre)

The most famous shore fishing venue in Wicklow, host to European and World Shore Fishing Championships and the benchmark against which every other Wicklow mark is measured. On this north Wicklow shingle belt, regional sources document the falling tide as the most productive window; an easterly blow that colours the water still does the heavy lifting for bites. Expect codling, coalfish, whiting, dabs and dogfish through winter, with bass and mackerel in season. In flat, calm conditions it can be frustratingly slow, which is where the nickname comes from. Fish it after a blow and the reputation becomes clear.

2. Brittas Bay

A 5km sweep of clean sandy beach south of Wicklow town and one of the premier bass and smoothhound venues on the east coast. The southern corner is the most productive section and has produced specimen bass over 5kg. Avoid daytime fishing in July and August, fish evening and night tides instead. The flooding spring tide on an autumn evening is the classic Brittas Bay formula.

3. Kilcoole Beach

Long shingle and sand south of Greystones with the best tope fishing on the Wicklow coast. The area around the Breaches, where a drainage channel meets the beach, concentrates bass and tope in autumn. October night sessions on big spring tides with whole mackerel are the formula for tope. Railway crossing applies, cross carefully and close all gates.

4. Greystones Harbour & Pier

The best all-round beginner and family mark on the coast. Walk-on access, no railway crossing, and reliable species year round. Mackerel flood in from June through September. Pollack, coalfish, dogfish and wrasse all feature, and calm evenings can produce garfish on float tackle along the outer wall. Night sessions in autumn produce bass and whiting. An outstanding first mark and a consistently productive one at every level.

5. Wicklow Head

The most easterly point of the Wicklow coast and a strong rock mark for pollack, coalfish, wrasse, bass and mackerel. Not for beginners, the rocky access and strong tidal run demand experience and care. But for the angler who respects the mark, the species quality and variety is the best on the coast. Dawn sessions in settled summer conditions are outstanding.

6. The Murrough

Eleven miles of continuous shingle and sand between Greystones and Wicklow town, one of the longest uninterrupted shore fishing coastlines in Ireland. Multiple access points along the R750. Whiting, flounder, bass and dogfish are reliable through autumn and winter. A serious match fishing coastline that has hosted international competitions.

7. Jack's Hole

A rocky cove between Silver Strand and Brittas Bay with outstanding autumn bass on lures tight to the kelp edges. September and October are the peak months. The mixed rock and sand ground also produces wrasse in summer and occasional specimen smoothhound. Less well known than the main beaches, which means more space and less pressure on the fish.

8. Wicklow Town Pier

Accessible pier mark. Mackerel, pollack, coalfish, whiting, dogfish and flatfish all feature through the year. Good night sessions from autumn onwards. A reliable fallback when weather prevents fishing the open beaches.

9. Silver Strand

Clean sandy beach south of Wicklow Head producing bass, flounder and dogfish, the spot guide still calls out high water and two hours either side on this shallow shelf, but the wider Greystones to Wicklow belt is documented ebb-led after an easterly colours the water; treat spring and autumn night surf as the classic rough-weather bass window here. The southern end close to Jack's Hole is the most productive section. A reliable autumn and winter mark that is significantly less pressured than Brittas Bay to the south. Easy access from the car park.

10. Wicklow Head Long Rock

The go-to open rock mark for wrasse, pollack and summer lure work on this coast. Deep water close to the platform and strong tidal movement concentrate fish along the kelp fringe. Access and footing demand care; fish with a partner and skip any swell. Bray Head Rocks stays in the directory with access closed while the cliff walk is shut, do not attempt that mark.

Why Wicklow is one of Ireland's best sea fishing coasts

Co. Wicklow offers over 40km of continuous east-facing coastline, shingle beaches, sandy strands, rocky headlands, piers and harbours, that between them produce an extraordinary range of species. Bass, smoothhound, tope, flounder, whiting, mackerel, pollack, coalfish, wrasse, dab and dogfish are all regularly caught from the shore. The coast is sheltered enough to fish in a wide range of conditions, productive enough to reward both beginners and experienced anglers, and, apart from the summer months, remarkably uncrowded.

The combination of easterly exposure, strong tidal runs and varied ground type makes Wicklow genuinely distinctive as a sea fishing destination. An easterly wind that would ruin fishing on a west-facing coast is the classic trigger for outstanding beach fishing here. Understanding how to read that relationship, between wind direction, sea state and fish behaviour, is the foundation of fishing Wicklow well.

The key marks and what they produce

What sea fishing is free in Wicklow?

No State rod licence for ordinary sea angling. Salmon and sea trout need one. Beyond that, shore sea fishing here is free: no permit, no day ticket. You can fish from any beach, pier or rock mark on the Wicklow coast without cost or paperwork. The only restriction worth knowing is bass: two bass per angler per 24 hours, minimum size 42cm, with no bass angling during the spawning closure from 15 May to 15 June (Bye-Law No. 826 of 2007). From 1 February to 31 March catch and release only applies in ICES Division 7a (Irish Sea). In other months retention is permitted subject to the two-fish limit and minimum size. Most serious anglers practice full catch and release for bass.

Other species have no general closed season for sea fishing in Ireland. You can fish any mark, any month, subject to species-specific rules such as bass. The practical constraints are conditions, species availability by season, and the tides, not regulations.

Species calendar, what to target and when

The easterly blow rule, the most important thing to understand

The Wicklow coast faces east. An easterly wind pushes colour and surf directly onto the beaches and creates the feeding conditions that produce the best fishing. After 24 hours of easterly wind, even 15 to 20 km/h, open beaches like Kilcoole, Greystones South and Brittas Bay fish in a completely different league to flat, calm days. Bait fished within 30 to 40 metres of the shore will catch bass in these conditions. Long casting is not only unnecessary but often counter-productive, the fish are in the coloured surf close to the beach.

In calm, clear conditions the situation reverses. Fish retreat to deeper water, longer casts are needed, and switching to lures often outperforms bait. Westerly winds produce flat, offshore conditions, generally poor for beach bait fishing but excellent for lure fishing from piers and rock marks where the still, clear water allows fish to hunt by sight.

Tides, Wicklow reference points

Wicklow tide times are about 18 minutes ahead of Dublin Port. Always use the Wicklow station as your reference, applying Dublin times directly puts you on the beach at the wrong state of tide. The Marine Institute publishes free real-time tidal data and predictions for Wicklow, Arklow and Dun Laoghaire at marine.ie.

There is no single Wicklow-wide tide rule. On the Greystones to Wicklow shingle belt (Kilcoole, Greystones South, Murrough), regional sources favour the falling tide for bass, whiting and flatfish after a blow. On open sand such as Brittas Bay, bass and smoothhound often feed strongly from mid-flood through high into early ebb, use the individual spot guide. Flounder and whiting often bite well around slack on many marks. The ebb at Greystones South Beach runs strongly southward and demands grip leads of 5 to 6oz to hold bottom.

Bait for Wicklow shore fishing

Fresh ragworm and lugworm are the backbone of general Wicklow shore fishing. Frozen worm works in a pinch but fresh bait on the day is noticeably more effective. Ring ahead if you are relying on shop stock, especially in summer when demand spikes.

Peeler crab for bass and smoothhound is often collected from rocky shore at low water from late spring, or bought when in season. Mackerel for bait can be caught on feathers from harbour walls in summer or bought frozen before a session.
