Why Wicklow for bass?
Updated for the 2026 season. Bass are moving onto Wicklow beaches and rock marks from late May, with sport building through June as water temperatures climb. The Wicklow coast is one of the finest bass fisheries on the east coast of Ireland: a continuous run of east-facing shingle and sandy beaches from Bray to Arklow gives anglers over 40km of productive shore, much of it barely fished. Specimen fish over 5kg remain a realistic target from the shore in spring and autumn.
Bass are the most sought-after species on this coastline for good reason. They fight hard, they demand skill to catch consistently, and they inhabit some of the most dramatic shoreline in Ireland. Whether you're fishing a soft plastic lure along the gullies at dawn or presenting a fresh peeler crab in a good easterly surf, bass fishing on the Wicklow coast is an outstanding experience.
When to fish, seasonal guide
Bass are present on the Wicklow coast from March through November, with two distinct peak seasons. The spring run in May and June sees fish moving inshore as water temperatures rise and peeler crabs become active. These fish are often in excellent condition after overwintering offshore and will take both bait and lures aggressively. September and October produce the best fishing of the year, bass are feeding hard before moving offshore for winter, bait fish shoals are thick inshore, and the first autumn easterlies push ideal surf conditions onto the beaches.
July and August produce bass but daytime fishing is difficult on popular beaches like Brittas Bay due to summer crowds. Night sessions and early mornings are the answer, bass feed most actively at dawn, dusk and after dark regardless of season.
The best Wicklow bass marks
Kilcoole Beach
A long shingle beach south of Greystones that produces consistent bass from spring through autumn. The area around the Breaches, where a drainage channel exits onto the beach, is particularly productive, as the freshwater mixing with salt attracts bait and concentrates fish. The north end near Ballygannon has produced shore tope in October and November. Cross the railway carefully and close the gate.
Greystones South Beach (The Hungry Acre)
One of the most famous shore fishing venues on the east coast, host to European and World Shore Championships. On this shingle stretch, match and regional write-ups favour the falling tide as the documented bite window; an easterly blow that colours the water still transforms the beach. When conditions are right, long casting is unnecessary, fish are often in close. In calm conditions it can be frustrating (hence the nickname), but fish it after a blow and you'll understand the reputation.
Brittas Bay
A 5km sweep of open sandy beach that is one of the premier bass venues in Wicklow. The southern corner consistently produces the best fish. Specimen bass over 5kg have been taken here. Avoid daytime fishing in July and August, instead target evening and night sessions which produce fish throughout the season. The flooding spring tide on an autumn evening is the classic Brittas setup.
Silver Strand & Jack's Hole
Two adjoining marks south of Wicklow Head. Silver Strand is a clean sandy beach producing bass, flounder and occasional spurdog. Jack's Hole, the rocky cove between Silver Strand and Brittas Bay, is an outstanding autumn bass mark with deeper, more mixed ground. Lure fishing tight to the kelp edges at Jack's Hole in September and October can be exceptional.
Conditions, the easterly blow rule
The single most important thing to understand about bass fishing on the Wicklow coast is the relationship between wind direction and fishing quality. The coast faces east, which means an easterly wind pushes colour and surf directly onto the beaches. After 24 hours of easterly wind, even a modest 15 to 20 km/h breeze, open beaches like Kilcoole and Brittas Bay fish in a completely different league to flat, calm conditions.
In a good easterly surf, bass move close in to feed in the coloured water where food is being disturbed and concentrated. Baits fished within 40 metres of the shore are the key to success in coloured water. Many anglers set up for a 100 metre cast and put their bait into clean water beyond the productive zone. The fish are in the coloured surf close to the beach, not in the clean blue water beyond it.
In calm, clear conditions the rules reverse. Bass retreat to deeper ground and long casts of 80 to 120 metres are needed to reach them with bait. Alternatively, switch to lures, soft plastics and surface lures consistently outperform bait in clear water because they cover ground and can be worked through the bass's field of vision.
Best baits for Wicklow bass
Peeler crab
Spring & autumn
The dominant Wicklow bass bait. Fresh peeler dramatically outperforms frozen. Whole small crab or large half crab secured with elastic thread.
Ragworm
Year round
Most versatile bait. Particularly effective for bass in surf conditions. Hook once through the head and leave a long wriggling tail.
Sandeel
Summer
Outstanding bass bait in summer when sandeel shoals are present inshore. Fresh or frozen, bass will take both. Freelined or on a light running ledger.
Rigs and methods
For bait fishing, the running ledger is the foundation rig, a sliding lead above a swivel with an 18 to 24 inch fluorocarbon hooklink of 15 to 20lb and a size 2/0 to 4/0 circle hook. In heavy surf use a pulley rig with a breakaway grip lead of 4 to 5oz to protect large crab baits during the cast and hold bottom in the swell. Always use grip leads on Wicklow beaches, the tidal run is stronger than it looks and a plain bomb lead rolls immediately.
For lure fishing, a 9 to 10ft medium lure rod with a 4000 reel and 20lb braid is the standard setup. A 3 to 4ft fluorocarbon leader of 20 to 25lb ties to your lure via a small snap link. In surf, a 4 to 5 inch paddle tail on a 12 to 15g jig head worked slowly through the gullies on a sink-and-draw retrieve is the most consistent method. In calm water, surface walkers at dawn and dusk along the shallow gutters produce savage takes.
Tides and timing
Tide choice depends on the ground: on the Greystones to Wicklow shingle belt (Kilcoole, Greystones South, Murrough), regional consensus favours the falling tide for bass and flatfish after a blow. On open sand marks such as Brittas Bay, bass and smoothhound often feed strongly from mid-flood through high water into early ebb, check the individual spot guide for each mark. Dawn and dusk stay the most reliable feeding periods; bright midday sun pushes bass off shallow beaches into deeper water.
For tidal reference, Wicklow is 21 minutes ahead of Dublin Port. Use the Wicklow station on the Marine Institute tidal predictions as your reference, applying Dublin times directly will put you on the beach at the wrong stage of tide.
Conservation
Bass are a slow-growing species under strict EU protection. Irish anglers are limited to one fish per day over 42cm minimum landing size. The serious bass angling community in Ireland practices full catch and release, a bass that has taken 8 to 10 years to reach 3kg is too valuable to kill. Use circle hooks which are less likely to be swallowed deeply, wet your hands before handling fish, support the fish in the water while unhooking, and lower it back gently.
