Bass from piers, an underrated approach
Most Irish anglers think of bass as a beach species, and they are right that open sandy beaches produce the majority of bass. But piers and harbour walls are seriously underrated bass marks, particularly from late spring through autumn. Bass move into harbours and along pier walls to feed on the shoals of small fish, sand eels and crustaceans that congregate around structure. Greystones Harbour is one of the most consistent bass venues on the Wicklow coast precisely because it offers both beach and structure fishing in one location.
When bass come to piers
Bass move onto pier marks from April onwards as water temperatures begin to rise. May and June are excellent as fish follow the first runs of sand eels and small pollack into harbours. July and August can be quieter during daylight hours as warm, clear water makes bass wary, but night sessions produce fish consistently. September is outstanding as feeding intensifies before the winter migration. October can also produce good fish before they finally leave inshore.
The best sessions are at dusk and after dark. Bass lose their caution in low light and move tight to pier walls and structure. Evening tides that coincide with darkness are the prime window, the last two hours of daylight through to midnight is when pier bass are most catchable.
Best Wicklow pier marks for bass
Greystones Harbour
The premier pier bass mark on the Wicklow coast. Fish the outer wall and entrance on an evening flood tide. Lures work well along the wall edges, soft plastics and surface lures at dusk. Bait anglers use peeler crab or ragworm on a running leger fished into the harbour entrance channel.
Wicklow Town Pier
Bass move along the pier walls and into the harbour in summer and autumn. Evening sessions are most productive. The rocks below the castle ruins produce bass on lures during calm conditions. Fish peeler crab or sandeel on the sandy ground around the pier mouth.
Lure fishing for pier bass
Lure fishing is the most effective and enjoyable method for pier bass. A medium spinning rod of 9-10ft matched to a 3000 size reel loaded with 15lb braid and a 20lb fluorocarbon leader is the ideal setup. Work lures along the pier wall, through the harbour entrance and around any structure or mooring ropes.
Soft plastics
4-5 inch paddle tail shads on a 15-20g jighead are the most versatile pier lure. Work them slow and low along the bottom and up through the water column. Colours: white, pink, chartreuse in coloured water; natural silver or sand eel in clear.
Surface lures
At dusk and after dark, surface lures produce explosive takes from pier bass. Walk-the-dog style poppers and pencil lures worked across the surface in the harbour entrance are particularly effective from June to September.
Hard lures
Small Dexter Wedges, Savage Gear Sand Eels and similar slim minnows cast along the pier wall and retrieved steadily are reliable bass producers. Weight 15-25g for pier casting.
Bait fishing from piers
For those who prefer bait, a simple running ledger with peeler crab or ragworm fished in the harbour entrance or along the pier wall will catch bass from May through October. Use a long hooklink of 2-3 feet to allow the bait to move naturally in the tidal flow. Size 2/0-4/0 circle hooks work well as bass often hook themselves and circle hooks reduce gut-hooking for easier release.
Bass conservation
Bass are a protected species in Irish waters and under severe pressure throughout their range. The bag limit is one bass per angler per day with a minimum size of 42cm. Many pier anglers practise full catch and release, this is strongly encouraged. Handle bass carefully, minimise time out of the water, and support the fish horizontally when returning it. A well-handled bass swims away strongly and will be caught again.
