On the day

Casting and handling fish.

Before every cast

Look behind you every single time. Walkers and dogs appear from nowhere on Wicklow beaches, and a 4oz lead is a serious projectile.
Smooth beats hard. A steady overhead punch casts further and safer than a full swing. Distance comes from timing, not force.
Never cast without the shock leader from the checklist above. It is what stops the lead snapping off mid-cast.
On piers, drop the rig to your side and lower it. Do not cast overhead when anyone is within a rod length.

When you catch one

Wet your hands before touching any fish you plan to release. Dry hands strip the protective slime coat.
Carry a disgorger or long-nosed pliers and keep unhooking time short. If a hook is deep, cut the line close rather than digging.
Know the legal limits before you keep anything. Bass and pollack carry strict rules, check sea fishing rules first.
