Fresh worm from tackle shops, call ahead on busy weekends. Seasonal bait notes on the blog.
Rod and reel
12 to 13ft beachcaster + 6000 fixed spool reel, a solid all-rounder for Irish beach and pier fishing.
15lb mainline + 60lb shock leader
The shock leader absorbs the snap of a power cast. Never skip it, it prevents crack-offs that lose your rig and endanger people nearby.
A pack of ready-made pulley rigs
No tying required. Pulley rigs also self-release fish as the tide runs, keeping your bait presented correctly.
Hooks sizes 1/0 to 3/0
Suits most Wicklow species. Go smaller (1/0) for flounder and dab; larger (2/0 to 3/0) for bass and bigger baits.
A selection of sinkers
3 to 5oz grip leads hold bottom in surf. Plain bombs work in slack water. Buy a mix to start.
Bait, ragworm or lugworm
The two most reliable baits on the Wicklow coast. Available from local tackle shops, call ahead on busy weekends as stock sells out.
Tide times for your chosen mark
Fish feed in moving water; the best stage depends on the mark. Read the spot page before you travel.
A headtorch for dawn and dusk sessions
Clip it to a cap rather than carrying it, you'll need both hands to rig up and unhook fish in low light.
First marks (Wicklow)
Greystones South Beach
Beginner-friendlyWide open beach, easy access, mixed species.
Shingle belt: falling tide after an easterly colours the water is the usual write-up, confirm on the spot page.
Open mark guide →Brittas Bay South
Beach sessionsLong surf beach, flounder and bass in season.
Open sand: two hours either side of high is a common window. Avoid heavy swell.
Open mark guide →Wicklow Town Pier
Pier fishingSheltered pier, mackerel and pollock, great for kids.

If you already read wind, swell and tide, you still need a Wicklow-only picture: twenty mapped marks, species pages keyed to those marks, and a plan layer that ranks the same catalogue against today's sea state.
Below: fixed-price spinning combos for lighter work, then three starter stacks aligned with how Today's plan and spot pages suggest tackle. Cross-check sinkers and bait on your mark guide before you buy.
Budget spinning combos
Four fixed Amazon picks by price, all are spinning rod-and-reel kits for lighter lure work, piers and inshore sessions. Long surf bait-casting with grip leads still belongs in the suggested setups below.

Bait fishing
Beach & pier, worm and rigs
Same backbone as Today’s plan when bait makes sense: rod, reel, ready-made pulley rigs, then frozen ragworm. Cross-check sinkers on your spot guide, surf asks for more grip lead than calm pier corners.
Amazon UK picks
Lures
Soft plastics & crab imitation
Aligned with the plan’s lure stack when bass or pollock lead the targets: the same beach rod and reel, a crab imitation for browsing fish, and paddle tails for tide edges and pier shadows.
Amazon UK picks
Rough ground
Rock marks, ledger & grip
Matches rock-oriented gear on Today’s plan and heavier marks in the directory: a stronger rod class, limpet-style grip where kelp pulls, short rock traces, plus the crab lure for wrasse and bass tight to structure.
