What's in season on the Wicklow shore right now
Late August is the turn. Summer mackerel and peeler-driven smoothhound sessions are winding down, and the Wicklow shore pivots toward night beaches through September and October: whiting building, flounder back in serious numbers, autumn bass on the right tides, and the first honest shore tope window on big October springs. Whiting: nights take over
Whiting move into casting range from October, with September the warm-up month after dark on Kilcoole, The Murrough, Greystones South and Brittas. Early September nights can still feel quiet; keep sessions short and bait fresh until the first cold snaps thicken the shoals. Flounder: close-range winter prep
Flounder are back to proper form through September and October on Kilcoole, the Murrough, Brittas, Wicklow Town Pier and Silver Strand. Ragworm on a light running ledger, fish inside 40 metres, match flood-to-high on open sand and the falling tide on the shingle belt. Bass: autumn peak after the closure
Bass enter their classic autumn window once the May/June spawning closure has passed. Surf beaches and mixed shingle on evening floods remain the pattern; check the live Irish bass rules for bag, size and residual EU catch-and-release windows before you keep fish. Night sessions on shingle often produce the better fish later in the window.
Tope: late September into November
Shore tope are a short, serious window: late September through mid-November, October peak, night spring tides with whole mackerel or herring on Kilcoole north (Ballygannon) and the Murrough. Return every fish. This is not a casual first session; bring heavy beach gear and know your exit before the tide rises.
Dogfish and late smoothhound
Dogfish fill cold nights when other species go quiet. Late smoothhound can still show into early September on cleaner sand with peeler if you have fresh crab. Treat both as bonuses alongside the autumn trio rather than the main target.

Match species to tide and daylight before you travel. Early autumn default: flounder and bass on evening floods, with short whiting nights as water cools. Late October default: whiting after dark, then one serious tope tide on a big spring if you have the gear and an exit plan.
