Why target flounder?
Flounder are one of the most reliable shore species on the Wicklow coast, present year round, willing biters in cold conditions when most other species have moved offshore, and catchable by complete beginners with basic gear. They are a winter staple that keeps Wicklow anglers fishing through the dark months when bass and mackerel are long gone. A good flounder session when the tide is right for the ground, flood-to-high on open sand, falling-weighted on the north Wicklow shingle belt, is one of the most satisfying types of Irish shore fishing there is.
When do flounder feed best?
Flounder are available year round on the Wicklow coast but the prime season runs from October through to March. They are tolerant of cold water and actually feed more aggressively as temperatures drop, unlike most species. Summer flounder are smaller and less active. Autumn and winter fish are heavier, better conditioned and far more catchable.
The best tidal window depends where you stand. On open sand and estuary edges, the flood through high into early ebb is classic, flounder follow the water up onto feeding ground. On the Greystones to Wicklow shingle belt, spot-level guidance often favours the falling tide; treat Brittas and nursery beaches separately from Kilcoole or the Murrough. Slack water and the early ebb also produce well on many marks. Avoid the strong mid-ebb when the current is running hard and your lead will not hold.
Best Wicklow marks for flounder
Kilcoole Beach
Sandy ground produces flounder from autumn through spring; the shingle-belt pattern here is often the falling tide. Fish close in with ragworm on a simple running ledger. The railway crossing warning applies, cross with care and close all gates.
The Murrough
Eleven miles of shingle and sand between Greystones and Wicklow. Flounder are present all along the strand through the winter months. Easy access from the R750 at multiple points.
Brittas Bay
Sandy beach produces flounder alongside dogfish and whiting in autumn and winter. Fish the flooding tide close in, within 40 metres. Quieter in winter than summer with more fishing room.
Wicklow Town Pier
Flatfish feature regularly from the pier and surrounding ground. Flounder in autumn and winter, fish a simple leger rig with ragworm on the sandy ground around the harbour entrance.
Silver Strand
Clean sandy beach south of Wicklow producing flounder through autumn and spring. High water and the two hours either side (per the spot guide) with a light surf is the classic condition.
Tackle and rigs
Flounder do not require heavy or specialist tackle. A standard 12ft beachcaster or even a medium spinning rod works well. They are not powerful fighters but hook themselves readily on a light running ledger.
Rig
Simple running ledger, zip slider above a swivel, 18-inch hooklink of 10-15lb mono
Hook
Size 1 or 1/0 Aberdeen, fine wire penetrates easily and suits worm baits
Lead
2-3oz plain bomb in calm conditions, 3-4oz breakaway in any surf or current
Hooklink
10-15lb mono, flounder have no cutting teeth, no need for heavy trace
Best baits for flounder
Ragworm is the number one flounder bait on Wicklow beaches, fresh ragworm consistently outperforms everything else. Thread a whole large ragworm onto the hook leaving a short tail wriggling. Lugworm is a strong second choice. In estuaries and harbours, small pieces of peeler crab work well. Flounder are also attracted to small shiny attractors, a small spinner or sequin above the hook can increase bites significantly, especially in coloured water.
Key tips
- 1Fish close in, flounder feed in very shallow water, often within 20-30 metres of the shore.
- 2Use fresh ragworm, frozen worm catches far fewer flounder than fresh. Buy it on the day.
- 3Add a small sequin or spoon above the hook, flounder are attracted to flash and movement.
- 4Match tide to the mark, rising water on open sand; falling tide on north Wicklow shingle where that is what the spot guide documents.
- 5Try slow retrieving, slowly dragging the bait across the bottom can trigger flounder that are following but not committing.
- 6Winter night sessions produce the best flounder, they feed confidently after dark in cold weather.
