Keep it simple
Most Irish shore anglers fish with far more complicated rigs than they need. The reality is that three rigs cover the vast majority of shore fishing situations on Wicklow beaches and piers. Master these three and you will be better equipped than most anglers you meet on the beach. Complexity does not catch more fish, presentation and fresh bait do.
The three essential rigs
Running Ledger
Best for: Bass, flounder, smoothhound, dogfish, all general beach fishing
- 1Thread mainline through a zip slider or bead and run it over a 3-5oz breakaway grip lead
- 2Tie a swivel to the mainline as a stop for the slider
- 3Attach an 18-24 inch hooklink of 15-20lb mono to the swivel
- 4Tie a size 1/0-4/0 hook to the end of the hooklink
- 5Bait and cast, the lead holds bottom while the fish can take the bait without feeling resistance
Tip
Use a long hooklink (24 inches or more) for bass, they are line shy and a long trace gives a more natural bait presentation.
Pulley Rig
Best for: Distance casting with large baits, bass, smoothhound, tope
- 1Tie a large bead or swivel to the mainline as a pulley point
- 2Run a short length of heavy mono (60-80lb) through the bead and attach a lead link at one end
- 3Tie your hooklink (30-50lb) to the other end with a long 3-4 foot trace
- 4The lead drops to the bottom on impact, taking the hook with it, on retrieval the lead slides up reducing snagging
- 5Use with large crab or worm baits for smoothhound and bass at distance
Tip
The pulley rig is the standard distance rig for Wicklow beaches. It aerodynamically streamlines the bait during the cast, protecting it and increasing casting distance.
Two-Hook Paternoster
Best for: Whiting, dab, mackerel, mixed bags from beach and pier
- 1Tie a link swivel or blood loop 18 inches from the end of a 3-4 foot boom
- 2Repeat 18 inches above the first, two hook snoods total
- 3Attach a lead link at the bottom
- 4Tie 6-10 inch hooklinks of 12-15lb mono to each swivel
- 5Use size 1 or 1/0 hooks with small baits, worm, mackerel strip or squid
Tip
The paternoster presents two baits at different heights in the water column, ideal for whiting and dab which often feed at different levels depending on conditions.
Choosing the right lead
Lead choice is as important as rig choice on Wicklow beaches. The strong tidal run on beaches like Greystones South and The Murrough demands breakaway grip leads that anchor in the sand and hold bottom against the current. Use plain bomb leads only in very calm, slack water conditions. As a rule: if the tide is running, use a breakaway. Weights for Wicklow beach fishing range from 3oz in calm conditions up to 6oz in strong currents and heavy surf.
