Do you need expensive gear?
Shore fishing in Ireland does not require expensive equipment. The species targeted from Wicklow beaches, bass, whiting, flounder, dogfish, mackerel, are all catchable on mid-priced gear that will last years if looked after. Spend your money on fresh bait before expensive tackle. A €80 rod with fresh ragworm will catch more fish than a €400 rod with frozen worm.
The rod
For general beach fishing from Wicklow marks a 12 to 13ft beachcaster rated 4 to 6oz is the standard choice. This covers casting 60 to 100 metres with a 4 to 5oz lead, fishing lug and ragworm on clean sand, and handling fish up to smoothhound size.
If you plan to lure fish for bass alongside general beach fishing, a separate 9 to 10ft spinning rod rated 10 to 40g is worth having. This covers surface lures, soft plastics and metal jigs from both beach and pier marks.
Beach fishing
12 to 13ft beachcaster rated 4 to 6oz, Shakespeare, Fladen and Penn all produce reliable options in the €60 to 100 range
Lure fishing
9 to 10ft spinning rod rated 10 to 40g, covers bass from beaches, piers and rock marks on surface and sub-surface lures
The reel
Start with a fixed spool reel, easier to use and less prone to bird's nests than a multiplier. A medium-sized fixed spool in the 6000 to 8000 size range loaded with 15lb monofilament is the standard beginner beach setup. Penn, Daiwa and Shimano all produce reliable reels in the €50 to 80 range.
Line
Mainline
15lb monofilament is standard for Wicklow beach fishing, forgiving for beginners and handles the abrasion of sandy beaches well
Shock leader
60lb mono of around five metres, non-negotiable and must always be used. Absorbs the shock of the cast and prevents crack-offs that send lead weights flying
Lure fishing
20lb braid mainline with a 15lb fluorocarbon leader of 1 to 2 metres, more sensitive for feeling lure action and bites
Terminal tackle essentials
Leads
Grip leads in 3oz, 4oz and 5oz, breakaway pattern essential on Wicklow tidal beaches
Hooks
Size 1 and 1/0 Aberdeens for whiting and flounder; 2/0 for bass; 4/0 for smoothhound and tope
Swivels
Size 3 and 4 barrel swivels, buy in bulk, you'll lose them to snags
Snood line
20 to 30lb fluorocarbon for hook snoods, low visibility in clear water
Bait elastic
For securing soft baits to the hook, essential for peeler crab, ragworm and sandeel
Shock leader
60lb mono in 100m spools, always have plenty, replace regularly
Other essential items
Rod rest / tripod
Keeps your rod at the right angle while you wait for bites, essential for beach fishing where you cannot hold the rod all session
Long-nosed pliers
For removing hooks safely, particularly from dogfish whose rough skin can remove the skin from unprotected fingers
Cool bag
To keep bait fresh during the session, ragworm and peeler crab deteriorate quickly in warm conditions
Head torch
Essential for night sessions, choose one with a red light mode which preserves night vision between rod checks
Lures for bass and mackerel
4 to 5 inch shad on 15g jig head
The most versatile bass lure, works from beaches, piers and rock marks. White, pink and natural colours all produce. Retrieve steadily just above the bottom.
Dexter wedge or chrome slice
For casting distance and mackerel from piers. Cast uptide and retrieve across the current, hard to beat for summer pier sessions.
Surface walker / pencil lure
For calm summer evenings when bass are hunting fry at the surface. Few experiences in Irish shore fishing match a surface take from a bass at dusk.
