When whiting pack the beaches
On the Wicklow coast, whiting are a beach fish first. Late September and early October nights are the warm-up; from late October through February they sit over clean sand in 2 to 8 metres, often within casting range on big tides. Peak weeks are usually mid-November through December. Sea temperature drops, shoals push inshore, and night sessions on Kilcoole or the Murrough can produce double figures where summer bass anglers never cast. January and February thin the numbers but the fish left on the sand tend to be better quality. Check today's plan before you drive: a hard easterly on an open beach is a safety call, not a fishable session.
Best Wicklow beaches for whiting
Kilcoole Beach
The north Wicklow default for winter whiting. Long clean sand, straightforward access via the railway crossing, and a documented falling-tide bite on the shingle belt. Arrive an hour before dark, fish two hours into the ebb, and keep casts between 40 and 70 metres until bites tell you where the shoal is sitting.
The Murrough
Miles of shingle and sand north of Wicklow town. No single hotspot: whiting spread along the beach when conditions are right. Same falling-tide pattern as Kilcoole. Park sensibly, walk to quieter water, and spread two rods at different distances.
Greystones South Beach
Fishes best on a pushing ebb when the south-running current cuts a trough over the shingle. Two hours after high through early ebb is the window locals watch. Less volume than Kilcoole some nights, but less walking and reliable when the wind is south-west.
Brittas Bay (south end)
Open sand, not shingle. Whiting run here on the lower half of the flood through high water more often than on a hard ebb. Go before heavy winter surf shuts the mark down. You will often have the full beach to yourself after October.
Night tides that produce
Whiting feed hard after dark on Wicklow sand. Daytime winter sessions can produce the odd fish in coloured water, but the productive hours are dusk through the first two hours of full dark. Plan to be casting before the light goes, not arriving when other anglers are leaving.
Shingle marks (Kilcoole, Greystones South, Murrough): regional tide notes for this coast put the falling tide ahead of high on these beaches. Start as the ebb begins to run, not at slack. Open sand (Brittas south): favour the flood building to high, then the first hour of ebb if the surf stays manageable.
Spring tides move fish closer. On neaps, fish tighter to any rock or cliff run-off at the beach ends where even a modest current concentrates bait. At slack, lengthen snoods to 12 to 15 inches so the bait lifts and settles with less flow. Wicklow is roughly 21 minutes ahead of Dublin Port: use the tide and weather hub for local high-water times, then match the mark, not a single coast-wide rule.
Tackle and tactics that work
Rig
Three-hook flapper, size 1 or 1/0 Aberdeen hooks, luminous beads above each snood. Multiple hook-ups are normal when a shoal finds your bait.
Casting
Start at 60 to 80 metres on a pushing tide, then shorten as fish move in. Many bites come inside 40 metres once the shoal tracks the beach.
Strike
Do not strike at the first rattle. Let the fish pull against the lead. A hooked fish kicking in the tide often brings the rest of the shoal to your rig.
Bait
Fresh black lug is the top bait on Wicklow sand. Mackerel strip or lug tipped with mackerel picks out better fish. Change bait every ten to fifteen minutes in winter.
Two rods
One rod at 40 metres, one at 80 metres. When bites cluster on one distance, match the second rod. Fastest way to find the feeding band.
By-catch
