Access
Reach it from Dalkey village and Coliemore Road, or take the DART to Dalkey and walk down. Parking is tight and residential, so do not block houses, slips or turning areas. The harbour is small and boat-focused, with ferries and local craft using the sound. Bullock Harbour nearby is a separate small-boat launch context, not a second shore mark folded into this page.
Tide
Use Dublin Port reference, with Dún Laoghaire effectively +0 minutes for high water. In this small harbour, mid water through high is the practical shore window because low water exposes awkward rock and reduces useful depth. Strong sound flow can make the best-looking cast difficult to hold.
Safety
Slippery harbour steps, boat traffic and strong streams in Dalkey Sound are the key risks. Keep clear of ferry and local craft movements. Do not climb private or closed foreshore around Vico or beyond the obvious public harbour area. No charter, hire-boat or island-access product claims are made here.
Tactics
Keep tactics compact. Fish worm and fish baits on simple ledgers for codling, whiting, dogfish and conger where the bottom allows; step up hook size and trace strength if specifically targeting conger after dark. Pollack and coalfish are better on float gear, soft plastics or small metals worked near rock and wall edges. Mackerel are a seasonal bonus when shoals push inshore. Do not treat Dalkey Island boat drifts as shore marks.
Ground
The immediate shore ground is harbour wall, rough rock, small clean pockets and current-influenced water toward Dalkey Sound. Fish hold close to wall edges, around rock breaks and wherever tidal movement pushes food past the harbour mouth. Casting distance is limited by space and boat traffic, so short accurate casts beat big pendulum ambitions. The rougher edges can hold pollack and conger but will punish light multi-hook rigs.
Session pattern
A typical Coliemore session is short, tidy and tide-aware: arrive with one or two rods, check boat use, fish mid water through high, then leave the harbour as clear as you found it. Use Dublin Port times through the Dún Laoghaire reference, effectively the same high water for planning. Common mistakes are arriving with beach gear, blocking local access, overclaiming island-water reports as shore evidence, and fishing into strong Dalkey Sound flow without a landing plan.
Species context
Cod: Deep harbour channels, pier-wall snags and the Greystones to Wicklow shingle belt in winter, anywhere young cod gather around tidal flow and coloured water after a blow. Codling is the usual Wicklow shore size class, not a separate target species here. Season coast-wide: October to December.
Pollack: Rocky kelp ground, harbour walls and pier pilings where current runs past structure, often tight to the wall or reef edges. Season coast-wide: Year round.
Coalfish: Harbour walls, pier mouths and rough ground where baitfish shoals run, especially in colder months when pollack fishing fades. Season coast-wide: September to May.
Conger eel: Rocky ground, pier pilings and harbour walls with crevices and snags where eels lair by day and hunt after dark. Greystones Harbour, Wicklow Town Pier, Jack's Hole and Wicklow Head Long Rock are the Wicklow marks where conger feature. Season coast-wide: Year round.
Mackerel: Open water around harbour mouths and headlands when baitfish shoals are pushed close in; often mid-water rather than tight to the surface. Season coast-wide: June to October.
Whiting: Open sandy and shingle beaches and harbour channels in winter, following whitebait and sandeel shoals inshore. Season coast-wide: October to April.
Dogfish: Clean sandy ground from shallow surf to deeper water, often around sandbars and gutters where food collects. Season coast-wide: Year round.
