Updated for the 2026 season. Wicklow Town offers the most diverse shore fishing in the county within walking distance of the town centre: working harbour pier, sheltered inner water for mullet and flounder, and serious rock fishing at Wicklow Head a short drive south. Mackerel, pollack, garfish and mullet fill the harbour in summer; tope, ray, pollack and wrasse define the headland. This guide covers both venues, seasonal species, access, and safety for 2026.

The harbour at the mouth of the River Dargle is the everyday venue for Wicklow anglers. Two breakwaters, a slipway and the town pier produce codling, dab, flounder and plaice through winter, with mackerel, pollock, garfish and mullet in summer. Light tackle and small hooks often outfish heavy beach gear here.
Fish the harbour entrance rather than blindly casting into the blocks. Low light and after-dark sessions are consistently more productive than bright midday sun. Squid on egi tackle are now a genuine autumn target from the pier, alongside the traditional mackerel and pollack float sessions.
Wicklow Head
Wicklow Head is a different proposition: deep, tide-swept rock with pollack, coalfish, wrasse and mackerel in season, plus ray and occasional tope from heavier ledger setups. Lure fishing at dawn on calm summer days is the classic approach on the safer platforms below the golf course.
The headland splits into several sub-marks. Long Rock, Bride's Head and the lighthouse rocks each have different access and risk profiles. Bride's Head is the documented safer spinning mark; the lighthouse sector is advanced rock fishing only. See our dedicated Wicklow Head fishing guide for mark-by-mark detail.
Wicklow Head access and safety
Access is via the R750 south of town, then footpaths from the lighthouse car park down to rock platforms. Paths are steep and slippery when wet. Never fish alone at Wicklow Head, tell someone your plans, and establish an exit route before you cast.
Safety note
The tidal run around the headland is stronger than it appears from above. Rogue waves are possible in swell. Leave if conditions deteriorate. No fish is worth the risk on exposed rock.
Species by season
Spring (March to May)
Plaice on nearby sand in calm weather. Flounder in the harbour. First bass and garfish from late April into May.
Summer (June to August)
Mackerel and pollack from the pier on most sessions. Mullet on bread flake in the inner harbour. Bass on lures at Wicklow Head at dawn.
Autumn (September to November)
Bass remain on lures at the headland. Tope reported from harbour and beach marks as a bonus. Squid on egi from the pier in settled autumn evenings.
Winter (December to February)
Whiting and flounder from the pier at night. Pollack and coalfish in deeper harbour water. Codling on worm baits through cold spells.
Parking and access
Harbour
Town centre parking within walking distance of the pier. Evening sessions are straightforward once day-trip traffic clears.
Wicklow Head
Car park at the lighthouse on the R750. Allow time for the footpath descent and return before tide or darkness.
Tides
Wicklow tides run about 21 minutes ahead of Dublin Port. Harbour fishes on most stages; headland marks need more planning.
Town beaches
Silver Strand and the Murrough are a short drive north for bass and flatfish when you want open sand rather than pier fishing.
