Where they live

Warm shallow estuary flats, sandy bays and shellfish beds in the southwest, especially west Cork.

What to use

Peeler crab · Razorfish · Hardback crab · Mussel

How to fish them

Fish a running ledger with a short strong hooklink over shellfish beds on the biggest spring tides, following the flood onto warm shallow flats.

Get your bait

The bait that works here comes off the shore, not out of a box.

Peeler crab is collected, not bought. You turn it out from under rock, weed and loose stone on the bottom of the tide, then hold it until it sheds.

Peeler availability follows the moon and the tide: collect on big spring low water, when the most ground uncovers.

How to find, keep and fish peeler crab
  • Mussel is picked off mid-shore rock and pier legs on the ebb, then bound to the hook. Pick on any low water, take only what you will fish that session, and leave the small ones on the rock.

  • Bait elastic thread

Binds soft collected bait to the hook so it survives the cast.
