Bass feed aggressively after dark on Wicklow beaches when they move shallow with less disturbance. Night sessions often produce better fish than busy daytime beaches, with fewer walkers and less line-shy behaviour in the surf. This guide covers why night works, which marks to fish, tackle choices, safety, and tides for shore bass after dark on the east coast.
Why fish for bass at night
Bass are naturally more confident in low light. They hunt closer to the shore, follow baitfish along gutters, and take lures and baits that they might ignore in bright midday conditions. On popular beaches, night also means less angling pressure and quieter water at the rod tip.
The trade-off is reduced visibility and higher stakes on safety. Night bass fishing rewards preparation: known marks, good lighting, and a clear plan for tides and exit routes.
Marks that fish well after dark
Greystones South Beach
A serious bass beach in surf and coloured water. At night, fish the inner gutter with peeler crab, sandeel or soft plastics on a slow retrieve. Know the shingle shelf in daylight before fishing it in the dark.
Kilcoole Beach
Open sand and shingle with bass close in on flooding tides. Night sessions after an easterly blow can be productive. Railway crossing rules apply: close gates and check both ways.
Brittas Bay
Evening and night tides in summer suit bass on the southern end. Avoid busy summer daytime crowds and fish the flood into darkness with crab or lures in light surf.
Tackle for night bass
A 9 to 10ft bass or lure rod with a 4000 class reel and 20lb braid is the standard lure setup. Add a 20 to 25lb fluorocarbon leader of 3 to 4 feet.
Dusk and first dark
Surface lures and poppers work when the sea is calm and bass are visible chasing bait at the surface. Start at dusk before full darkness.
After dark
Soft plastics on jig heads, paddle tails worked slow and low through gutters, often outfish surface baits once light fades completely.
Bait fishing
Peeler crab and sandeel on a running ledger remain effective at night on beach marks. Fish close in where bass patrol the surf table.
Safety for night shore fishing
- 1Never fish exposed rock marks alone at night
- 2Tell someone which mark you are fishing and when you will be back
- 3Carry a headtorch plus a backup light, and spare batteries
- 4Know the tide time and leave margin to exit before water cuts you off
- 5Wear studded boots on rock; on beaches be cautious at the surf edge
- 6Consider a buoyancy aid when fishing surf margins or unfamiliar ground
Tides and timing
The first two hours of the flood tide are a productive window on many Wicklow beaches, as bass move up with rising water. Slack periods around high water can also produce fish when movement slows and bait settles.
Midnight sessions on a spring tide can be excellent on open sand, but only if you have fished the mark in daylight and know where you are standing. Match Wicklow tide tables (about 21 minutes ahead of Dublin Port) and build in time to leave safely.
